 New Email 9/28/23

Time for a change... We have a New email address. Take note,

Contact us at: ( WebStaff-ENN@outlook.com ).

We are also at: ( EmpireNationalNursery4u@gmail.com )

And... the new webpage is at: ( http://05d60a9.netsolhost.com )

Ok, why the change? Time... When we started the online nursery in 1997, we have the website and that email, and that had gone on for about 25 years. For a hundred and one reasons, we made a major change and closed that website (cdr3.com) and that associated email address. We started the new streamlined webpage above, but had the email (nursery@empirenationalnursery.com). Now that has changed, and gets rid of a lot of junk mail...

Ordering... Yes, you can do so here through this blog, contact us via the New email address, or jump into the webpage and reach us there. Yes, always available via snail-mail, for sure...

What about the trees? Huh? Trees... yes, that is what we are all about, but we also sell a number of other items, like books, coins, sports trading cards, movies, trains, and a variety of other items (mostly via our Shops on Etsy and eBay). Trees are our core product line, but we like all of the other things too...

Fruit trees are something that has been of greater interest over the last several years, and we are trying to grow as many as possible as quickly as we can...

For Fall 2023, the fruit trees and all of the other trees and plants will become available when they become dormant again. That is weather-dependent, and based on previous seasons, some items become shippable as early as mid-October. Colder weather earlier will push trees into dormancy earlier, and if so, then we can resume shipping more earlier... Only the weather knows for sure, and once dormant, trees ship perfectly well.

Estimated Shipping Season for 2023-2024 will be "about" November 15th to May 15th. Once trees go dormant, they are asleep, so they can be lifted from the beds and stored in cold storage until shipped. Bookmark the webpage, and note our email address and "watch" for the availability to change. Once they are available to ship, we will update the webpage accordingly. You can always ask us if you have needs, wants, or questions...

Now one more rambling bit... We have a slogan, "Plan Early, Order Early, and Take Delivery Early for the Best selection". Here again, weather often dictates what we can do with shipping live plants (best while dormant), but supplies of plants vary from season to season. When we are out, then it may be a year or longer before we can grow them back into our inventory. Makes sense. But also, once the plants go dormant, then plant as early as practical. For the southern half of the country, plant from November through Winter. For the northern half of the country, planting will be weather-dependent moreso, which may be mid-Winter through late-Spring. Every location is different, but plant as soon as possible (or pot them to plant later). Waiting for Spring or late-Spring to plant is usually too Late! Too late because trees are not sensitive like tomatoes or peppers, and, the supply often runs out. Think about these things...

Enough said about stuff, our point was to relate the new email address.

 Get ready for Fall planting!

Available Coin List 6-2-23

This is a change of pace... we will be listing some of our Coins, Trains, and other Non-Nursery items here over the next several months.

Huh? Yes, although Empire National Nursery is primarily a tree nursery, offering fast-growing trees, fruit trees, and other plants goodies... but actually the business is mail-order. Empire National Company is the parent firm, although for the most part, we have run everything under the nurserys’ umbrella. And now that the tree shipping season is done, we are turning our attention to some of the other product lines to offer you some of these treasures, outside of Etsy or eBay.

So which are the Non-Nursery product lines? We also sell Books & Movies, Coins & Currency, Trains (mostly HO Scale), Baseball (Sports) Trading Cards (for which we have nearly 200,000), and an Other or Catch-All section. Now traditionally, we run these items off of the platforms like Etsy, Ebay, Bonanza, and others, but they charge us a fortune! Want the same item for half price? Here we are. You can order from this blog, or take the link to our webpage. You can also contact us via email (below), and tell us what you interests you. You can also mail-in your order if you prefer that method.

What about pictures? That is a challenge on this blog, we will add a few, but as these are also listed on eBay (where we put most of the non-nursery items), go to our store, find the pictures, then email us with your order. And, those items added to our webpage, there will be pictures available, and you can easily order from the webpage.

Now the lists will change, and most items are one-of-a-kind, so you might drop us a note before you commit to an item. And then bookmark this blog to keep in contact with the latest list, and scroll prior posts/lists to see whats new or different.

And yes, lets talk finances, shipping and handling... For online purchases, we use PayPal. PayPal is the leader and best on-line payment handler, and we have used them for the past 26 years. We also welcome a check or money order, mailed-in as well. Now shipping the Non-Nursery items is easier than plants, so we use mostly USPS 1st Class, Media Mil, Parcel Service, and some Priority Mail. We may use UPS also, as the nursery items primarily go that route.

Reliability and such... check out our Etsy and Ebay stores, and read the feedbacks.

Are Fruit Trees Still Available?

If you read the post we just put up, we mentioned the the Spring 2023 season is about done, and general shipping is about to halt until the Fall. But... we can and do still ship some trees, just not the full blown shipping program as during the "season". You can always email us and ask too.

So yes, as of today (5-9-23) there are still some fruit trees available. On Etsy and eBay, we have dropped most items, and shortly we will drop the rest, but again, email us for more details on what is really still available.

Of the Apple trees, we still have Red Delicious, Macintosh, Winesap, Fuji, Granny Smith, and maybe a couple stragglers...

Of the Peach trees, we still have the Georgia Bell Peach, the Red Haven Peach, and the Harvester Peach.

Now for the Plum trees, we have the Santa Rosa Plum and the Ozark Premier Plum.

Pear trees, we just have the Bartlett Pear available.

Ever try a Plum-Cot? It's a cross between a Plum and an Apricot, quite tasty, and quite unique!

Ok, all of these are still dormant and fresh in the cooler, and will ship fine... but not for much longer. These are the Standard size, which means they will grow upwards of 15 to 20 feet tall. The size will vary somewhat with your growing conditions. Now what we are shipping are small, in the 15-inch size range, nice second year grafted trees. Email us for prices.

Paw Paw trees? Yes, they are also still available, in the cooler, dormant, and nicely shippable as well... but again, for a short time longer.

For the most part, the Spring shipping season is done, and everything will become available again in the fall when the trees become dormant again. then it will be back to our regular shipping program. Taller trees too... What we have today, will go back into the beds to grow and develop further for larger more developed trees available later this Fall.

Fun stuff... thanks for asking. Now use the links below for more info.

Now What's New?

Yes, it has been quite a while since we have posted a post... but life is busy, and that never seems to stop or even slow down.

Ok, so what has changed or is new since the last posting? Lots...

Well, to start with, the Spring 2023 tree shipping season has all but concluded. As the temperatures have heated up across the nation, that makes shipping trees (even dormant trees) more challenging to get delivered in the best condition. The reasoning is, that trees shipped are subject to getting warm or drying out in the box as the shipment is sent from here to there. Although we inspect the trees and plants before packing, and pack them well, a box in transit can still be subjected to warm temps. We try to avoid that as much as practical, so many trees are dropped from the offering as the season progresses, and at some point, virtually all tree shipments are halted. So that is where we stand with the season... Yes, we can and do continue to ship trees and plants, but on a rather limited basis. Any questions, then email us.

And speaking about trees and shipping, again this season was dominated by an interest in fruit trees. We have had fruit trees forever, but over the last several years, there seems to have been a greater interest and popularity for fruit trees. Apple trees have been popular, as have peach trees, plum trees, and pear trees. Now cherry trees would be the most desired tree, but they have been limited in supply. Too bad, hopefully we can that sorted for next season.

Ok, enough of the trees... what else is new is the ever-changing website. We started with our cdr3.com website over 26 years ago, when the internet was brand new. We were one of the first out there on the "wild web", and we had done fairly well with that. But a couple years ago, due to technical challenges, we switched to a new fancy e-commerce package, and last year switched that to a different webpage. Our webpage and email (below) work fine, just still not what we are wanting. The ol' days of managing and coding our own pages are sorely missed...

But what we have planned and in store as time marches forward, is more ordering and interaction through this blog, and we might start another blog also. Want to order trees from here? Yes, we can do that with ads on the blog itself, but using our email, we can send an ordering list and handle a deal more personally. Avoid the web? No, not really, we list our products on the platforms like Etsy and eBay, but our current webpage is available too. We just want something in between, but you'll see as things develop.

And more about new... forever we have been about "fast growing" trees, with our Ameri-Willow as our Star brand. As noted, over the last several years, fruit trees are more of interest to the world out there, so we have concentrated more on those trees. If you can grow your own food, then we can help. That's important to grow some of your food, having a garden, fruit tree added to the landscape design, and maybe adding a small orchard. Whereas in the past, we grew over 200 types of trees and plants, now we barely grow fifty types of trees. We still experiment with a lot of stuff, but what we get into production that we can then offer, well, the fruit trees have become "our jam".

What else is new with us? We still use PayPal, we were on the "world wide web" longer before they started, but we have used them now for over 26 years. PayPal is still 100% good and reliable. But also, we still accept checks and money orders, and mailed-in orders.

So how new is this info we just shared? Not a great deal really. We are still the same as we have ever been. We still grow trees (primarily), and we still offer a lot of non-nursery items (which is mostly promoted on the platforms). The websites are new-ish, but all roads lead back to us, so that's not really new...

You read this posting, so that is new. Thanks. And we hope you will check out our webpage, and see what we offer on Etsy and eBay.

Website Changes

Over the course of time, and in the ever-changing cyber world, things change. Face it, this is a crazy time, and when dealing with the hi-tech mumbo-jumbo, coding is key... So we have made yet another change to the website.

Our last post was about the New website address, and how after 25 years of owning (cdr3.com) we have changed it to: (http://EmpireNationalNursery.com). Ok, that was a logical move, and this is currently a valid website address for us.

But, because the shopping cart on the new webpage didn't really do what we wanted it to do, we direct buyers to the updated shopping cart webpage, which is: (https://05d60a9.netsolhost.com/). To order trees and other items, this shopping cart works fine.

It is stupid or confusing what we have done? Oh yea, totally... but for now, this is the deal. We grow and sell trees, that's our mission. We have been doing this for over 50 years now, and in the mail-order business over 35 years. Our hopes and dreams aspire to grow and plant more trees, and inspire others to do the same, hence, we exist.

Check out the links to the websites, and see what's what.

New Website - New Email

After 25 years of the ol' program, we made the change into the 21st century. Yes, we know, slow and reluctant to change... Yes, but not really, in either case this is a major change, fixes a lot of old issues, and brings a fresh look to the site.

Although still "under construction", the site is functional, with all of the bells and whistles of a modern webpage...

The New Website is: (http://empirenationalnursery.com)

The New Email is: (nursery@empirenationalnursery.com)

So check it out, lots of changes ahead, but it will be refreshing...

Sunflowers and Bees - Download this Digital Print

This item is a JPG picture that you download. Once payment is confirmed by Etsy, Etsy will send you a link to download it. Once you download onto your device, do whatever you like with it... print it, share, use it in any capacity you want. Frame it and hang it where you can enjoy it, and it can make a nice git. This is my personal picture which I gladly share with you...

This picture was recently taken here on the farm. We grow a lot of flowers for the bees and butterflies, as well as just because they are beautiful. My wife does most of that side of activities around here.

The bees are certainly an important part of the ecosystem, and we appreciate all the work they do, like pollinating the fruit trees (which is my bias). The early flowers like the Forsythia and Quince, give way to the Dogwoods, Redbuds. Of course the Dandelions start early, and the bees like those a lot. The fruit trees start blooming, and the bees swarm to the Cherries first, then the Plums, followed by the Peaches, Apples, and Pears. Then by the end of that part of the blooming cycle, the berry shrubs, Butterfly Bushes, perennials and annual flowers are starting to come on. Finally, we get to the large showy Sunflowers, which the bees really enjoy.

The Statue of Liberty - Download this Digital Print

This item is a JPG picture that you download. Once payment is confirmed by Etsy, Etsy will send you a link to download it. Once you download onto your device, do whatever you like with... print it, share, use it in any capacity you want. This is my personal picture which I gladly share with you...

On a trip to New York City, in May 2019, one of the more remarkable opportunities was to take the boat out to see the Statue of Liberty, walk around it,and learn about this majestic sculpture. We also went to Ellis Island where the new immigrants came into this country, where they were interviewed and processed before entering the young United States. A wonderful history lesson, with an important message for today.

The message we should hear today is that of "Gratitude". When looking at the statue, she says, "Bring your tired, your hungry, your poor...". These desperate and poor soles came to the American shores for a chance of a positive change. A chance for freedom from oppression, hopes for a home, a job, to live in peace and safety. There were many reasons why the millions and millions of people from all around the world want to come here, the United States of America. Think about it...

During this crazy time in America, can we come together for even a moment, like for July 4th Independence Day, and give thanks for the many blessings we really do have in this country. We are Americans, born in this great land, or migrated to this land, with an opportunity live safely, learn, and make whatever of this life that you will. We have many freedoms and liberties that must people in the world only dream of having. America is not perfect, we are not perfect, and certainly I am far from perfect, but at least we can strive to make our lives and our country a little better. One day at a time..

Just look at the news, mob rule and “peaceful” protests are happening in the major cities, the Corona Virus has stymied our otherwise robust economy, censorship and spying have shredded our Rights of free speech and privacy, amidst a turbulent presidential election year. The major controversies these days revolve around defunding the police departments, perceived racism, gun control, freedom of speech and religion, and government over-stepping its bounds in regards to privacy and due process.

But.. be grateful you are "here" versus some other country where ones whining and little temper tantrums would have you beaten and dragged into prison. Be grateful that we "can" stomp up down the street screaming potty-mouth language at various people or groups. Be grateful you have food to eat, clean water, a place to live, and have clothes on your back. How spoiled we can become with our little cell phones and WI-FI, and a few dollars in our pockets. If we can get our heads out of our spoiled bottoms, we have a great wealth of blessings that we should be thankful for.

Think about it... Download this picture, print it out, and keep it somewhere you will be reminded that you live in the greatest country in the history of human civilization. Love this country, make it better, do something positive to improve the world in which you live.

Sorry to say, it was cloudy that day, but still, the picture should download a good enough glimpse of Lady Liberty. I sometimes think that it was better that the day was cloudy. It reminds me that people came from gloom and despair, to the Light of America... Hope, Freedom, and Liberty.

About the Statue

The Statue of Liberty is a colossal neoclassical sculpture on Liberty Island in New York Harbor in New York, in the United States. The copper statue, a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States, was designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and its metal framework was built by Gustave Eiffel. The statue was dedicated on October 28, 1886.

The Statue of Liberty is a symbolic representation of the American Independence. It is France’s gift and dedication to the US for the Declaration of the Independence. Thus the Statue is made aptly, depicting the Roman goddess of freedom, Liberta. The Statue, that way also represents friendship, liberty and openness.

About the Colorado Blue Spruce

One of the most popular trees to plant as a specimen or a fence line is the
blue spruce. For obvious reasons, it is rare to have a blue-ish color
tree. A tree that helps to increase property value probably more than any
other single tree, is the blue spruce.

The Colorado Blue Spruce (Picea pungens) is a member of the Pine Family
(Pinaceae), and the natural range is in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. They
are found at the higher elevations from 6,000 to over 10,000 feet, either
in dense stands or as scattered individuals. In the past, it was used as a
timber tree, especially as the mountain area was being developed, but
since then, it is a minor timber species. The tree is slow growing, from a
few inches a year, to maybe a foot or more if the conditions are good.

Since the introduction into the ornamental landscaping market, the blue
spruce has become very popular. They are expensive trees to buy, related
to the slow growth, but also to the uniqueness of the tree. There are now
about twenty varieties of this tree, but basically its still a blue spruce.

Use this tree to highlight a key area in the yard, where the tree is the
focal point of that area. You can also plant a line of spruces, along a
fence, driveway, as a screen or other border. As they get bigger, the
visual impact is stunning, and the value of the property is greatly
enhanced.

They grow tall, but slowly, and not wide spreading like a hardwood, so for
general planning, use one foot of growth per year. If you start with a one
foot tall seedlings, then generally, in ten years, that tree will be about
ten feet tall. A five foot tall tree, in another five years, would be
about ten feet tall. This is just a general rule, varies of course, but in
making landscaping decisions, this is worthwhile.

They can be planted almost nationwide, the hotter the climate, the less
well they grow, but you can find blue spruce in Florida. Certainly, if it
grows naturally at 10,000 feet, they can do very well throughout the
northern half of the country, and they do. The Colorado Blue Spruce is a
magnificent tree, drive around town and see how many there are.

A Few Words About the Horse Chestnut Tree

Native to southern Europe, specifically the Balkan States, the Horsechestnut is widely planted throughout Europe, and popularly planted in this country. Heights can be anywhere from 30 to 80 feet tall, broad to very broad in shape, with dense branching. The flowers are creamy-white, appearing about late April through early June. The nuts are encased in a thick spiny leathery 3-parted husk, and the seeds ripen about mid September to mid-October. The leaves are medium to light green and have serrations along the edges. This tree can be planted from USDA Plant zones 5 to 9, as a flowering shade tree, windbreak, or barrier tree. Growth rates would be considered medium-fast, about 2 to 3 feet a year once the tree gets established. One of the up and coming popular varieties has pink flowers.

That's just an exert from the Book... Ok, yes, we are promoting the book. It's a pretty good read though, easy, informative, and talks about the Horse Chestnut. Isn't that reasonable?

Want Quaking Aspen Trees for 33% Off?

Sure, why not... take the links below to learn more. Or would you rather learn a little bit about a very popular tree? How about both...

Quaking Aspen is a very popular tree nearly nationwide. Aspens are fast growing, white trunks, with attract leaves that flutter in the wind. Overall, a pretty nice tree for the landscape design, either for commercial projects, or just at home.

Now the Aspen, in the Populus genus, belongs to the Willow Family (Salicaceae), a large family of trees and shrubs, of which the genus comprises about 30 true species found throughout the northern hemisphere. Many of the species are used for various lumber or pulp products, and many of the trees are used in shelterbelt and environmental plantings. Aspens provide a valuable food source for many animals, which browse the leaves and shoots, and sometimes the bark. They are a pioneer tree, fast growers, among the first to colonize burned or cutover areas.

The Quaking Aspen (Populus tremuloides) has a huge natural range, and is the widest spread hardwood in North America. Aspens are native from the almost the Arctic Circle, across nearly all of Canada, down the Rocky Mountains and Cascade ranges, into the Sierra Madre mountains of Mexico. Over this vast range, there are a wide array of phenotypical and genotypical variants. That is, there are biological differences within the species, hereditary adaptations, from the interaction of the various environments the trees are found. These differences are most notably in the flowering and fruiting dates,  leaf growth, and dormancy. Trees from northern Canada, for example, will look the same as Aspens from Colorado, but their biological functions will occur at different times. Trees from the southern ranges, might not grow or do as well if planted in the northern areas. Across the entire range, there are natural hybrids and varieties.

Bonanza

We Joined Bonanza!

Have you heard of Bonanza? You know ebay and Amazon... well, it's similar. Bonanza is a shopping site, like ebay or Amazon, where there are items for sale. You browse the catagories or do a search, and check it out. If you like it, you buy it. Same concept with Bonanza.

We have some of our trees listed in our new booth, so if you are inclined, take a look. Just click on any of the text below to connect to our booth.

Why? Why not. We have been on ebay since 1997, and Amazon also that long, which does promote our trees and non-nursery items. Bonanza gives us another avenue to do the same. Our hopes, plans, and goals, revolves around trees and getting trees to those who plant them. We are in the nursery business to promote trees and tree planting. It is actually pretty difficult work to grow them, and do everything it takes to get them ready for sale. There are easier ways to earn a living, but for us, it's all about the trees.

Go to our Catalog, or the other webpages, and see what we do. For fun or curiosity, check out our Bonanza booth...

Get a Free Tree

Yes, another promo... why not, it is that time of the year. Our last post we noted the special clearance deals currently going on at the nursery, and we have added another.

For a limited time, when you place an order of "Any" size, we will add a Free Tree. It is a simple offer, not too many strings attached. We just have more trees to push. Good crops, nice trees, but kind of like too many...  Just check out the Catalog to learn more.

Now our emphasis has always been, "fast growing trees for privacy screens and windbreaks", and pretty much holds true, now over 22 years later. We do have trees for shade, and those that flower, plus some fruiting types, but we like trees that grow fast the best...

And with our free tree promo, it is a random pick, whatever is excess when orders are filled (basically). That is, when orders are filled, there are often extras, good trees, but just overcounts, so they go back to the beds or the cooler. What we just assume do is add the extras to the orders.

Spring is happening, here at least, Buds are swelling, green tiny leaves are appearing, the fruit trees are just about to burst forth with color, and our horrid cold weather is done with! The grass (and weeds) are greening up, and the birds are very active. Plant, plant, plant... we are, and so should you be planting as well.

Anyways, our latest promo is to inspire planting, and yes, sales for us, but why not add a freebie in there. Have any questions, or looking for something in particular, drop us a note.

Happy Planting...

  More About Privacy Screens

We talk a lot about screens and windbreaks, simply because they have been asked about the most of any topic. Although it may sound like a repeat of former messages, the basics are the same, just that your particular planting situation is unique.

A barrier of trees works for many planting or design uses, and it is just the specifics that are needed. That is, a line of trees is good for making a living fence, screen, green barrier, or windbreak. Any tree species will work. But depending on the goal of the project, the more rows you can plant, the more effective the barrier becomes. There are no hard and fast rules, and your particular site conditions may alter your plans some, but each additional row makes the project goal attainable.

Although any tree species can work, we favor those that grow fast. Makes sense, saves time. For any planting project, you have to consider that it will take years for a barrier to grow in and become what you hope it will become, so aster growing trees makes sense. Which trees to plant?

For Fast-Growing trees, the Willows and Poplars, are at the top of the list, because in fair to good growing conditions, these types of trees will grow the fastest. These are good for most parts of the country, and in most growing conditions and climates. There are several species we prefer. Yes, because we also sell them, but still good choices. You can go to our Catalog by taking any of the links and ads to learn more.

But also, consider adding a row, or several rows of evergreens. The fast growing broadleafs grow quickly, but in the winter, they are bare sticks. Planting evergreens adds that winter screening, but as a whole, the evergreens grow much slower. Over time, the barrier will be magnificent, but it will takes several years to get there. Therefore planting evergreens with the faster growers, makes sense. Something to ponder...

And again, which evergreens to select will depend on your conditions, but we have some suggestions. Also plantable over much of the country, consider pines, like Ponderosa Pine, Eastern White Pine, or Scotch Pine. Also consider Douglas-Fir, Norway Spruce, White Spruce, and even the Colorado Blue Spruce.

There a lot of choices to make in planning and planting a green barrier, but whatever is done, the results can be great and worthwhile.

Privacy Screens

As spring nears, people are getting more of that planting feeling. One of
the questions that keeps coming up are "What types of trees make good
privacy screens?"

Good question that has many answers. There are several things to keep in
mind:

1) What Plant Zone you're in (remember that topic?)
2) the space available
3) the desired outcome
4) value vs. "green junk"
5) time
6) cost
7) maintenance
8) neighbor aggravation/legalities
9) Others?

1) we talked about that, but if anyone has questions or wants a zone map,
just ask.
2) How wide your desired screen area is, plays an important role. "You
can't confine a shade tree in a 4x4 area very easily."
3) Dense, year-round, 20 feet tall, trimmable, no leaves to clean up
continually, etc. are typical desires for privacy screens
4) When you plant things, especially trees, plant what will increase the
value of your property, a long-term thought for you.
5) Do you have to have it now, then plant something already big. Or, if
you desire a dense screen in 3 years, or 5, then you can save money (and
your back) and plant smaller trees.
6) Related to #5, the bigger the tree, the more costly. Smaller plants
often grow as fast as larger ones, yet not as branched. In a few years,
you'd never really know the difference in many cases. "Biggest bang for
the buck" may well be the lil' fellas
7) How much trimming and clean up will be involved comparing this tree vs.
that?
8) If you plant something that overhangs the fence, or send roots into
your neighbors sewer lines, guess what?
9) What other considerations might you have, I touched on a few.

Ok, so given the background-intro., what trees make good screens?
The whole cypress family - cypress, (false) cedars, junipers. They stay
green year round, grow dense, grow slow to fast, but can get huge or stay
very small, check the plant zones. Good nationwide choice - American
Arbor-Vitae. Western red cedar or eastern red cedar (which is a juniper)
are pretty good candidates also. Italian cypress is great, tall, very
narrow shape, dense, but limited plant zone range.

Other conifers - Douglas-Fir, the true firs, and spruces. They will grow
mostly nationwide, do well especially where its colder, growth rate is
usually slow. Douglas-Fir can grow very fast. All are trimmable, stay
dense year round, but they will get large and medium broad over time. The
larger specimens can be pretty spendy. Value - Colorado Blue Spruce.

The pines - as a young screen, they will be dense, but in time, they can
get huge and the lower branches on the trunks usually drop/die, possibly
losing that privacy. Grow rate is medium to fast. Scotch pine and Austrian
pines are good to plant. Go with smaller trees for better planting
survival and cost savings.

Redwoods and  Giant Sequoias - they can be good, dense and fast growth,
but limited climate zones and they get somewhat gigantic!

Hardwoods? Yes, many hardwoods and shrubs make great privacy screens too,
but the chief drawback is fall and winter bare stems often negate the
screening effect. Plant several rows, if space allows it, and the mass of
twigs in the winter will be somewhat screening.

Mix conifers and hardwoods? If the space allows it, plant two to four
rows, staggered, of slower growing conifers and faster growing hardwoods
or shrubs. The hardwoods make fast a "seasonal screen",  then in time the
conifers will make the permanent screen.

We'll address fence lines and shelterbelts later.

 Spring is Near

We have received messages from all over the country people telling us
that spring is near, and others saying its still far away. How is it
where you're at?

Here in southwestern Missouri at our nursery grounds, the days are getting
into the low 40's, but the nights are still chilly in the mid 20's.
This has confused the trees, but a few plants are trying to leaf out.
The Flowering Quince  and Elderberries have lots of tiny new leaves. The willows, like the Weeping Willow, the White Willow, and the Ameri-Willow, which are often early, are still very dormant. Some of the grasses and weeds are greening up, hopfeully not the Johnson Grass yet.

Our spring planting and transplanting has been in full swing for over
two weeks now. Some cleanup, but a lot of planting, at least when the ground isnt frozen. There's still a lot get done.  We now have over 200 varieties of trees!
And growing!

What is the status of your spring plans?

Ready for planting? Take delivery early... do it now while everything is dormant.

___________

Colorado Blue Spruce Trees

As they get bigger, the
visual impact is stunning, and the value of the property is greatly
enhanced.

Time to Start Planting Tree Screens and Windbreaks

One of the most sought after desires or goals in the home landscape design, is privacy. Green screens, privacy fences, and the like have become very popular over the last number of years. How to achieve it, at a minimal cost, and in the shortest time possible, are key questions asked. Building a fence or wall can work, at least to some extent. They can be quickly built, but the costs can be prohibitive, and there may be a limitation as to the effective height. The living fence can be that alternative. Planting trees for windbreaks and screens is actually easy, and there are some suggestions as to which trees to use.

In this guide, we firstly talk about Screens, the basics. Then, we talk about trees and notes on several that we think are more applicable and reasonably available. The last section is some of the how-to information most useful for any tree or shrub-planting project, whether for screens, commercial uses, or for the home and garden landscape.

Get the eBook. It's easy enough. Just go to Amazon Kindle and look for the author. Or, plug the ASIN number into a search. Learn more about doing a Privacy Screen or Green Barrier this Spring.
